Our Story

It started with a problem nobody was solving

My father, Ntanda, is a chemist. He grew up in Congo and came to Switzerland, and somewhere in that move he noticed something that has shaped everything since: the skin he had known his whole life behaved differently here.

European winters are dry. Central heating is drier still. Water in much of Switzerland is hard. Skin that had been comfortable under a humid equatorial climate became tight, rough and ashy — and the products available on the shelves were not formulated with that in mind. They were made for other skin, tested on other skin, and they did not do the job.

In 1986 he started making something that would. That was the beginning of O’TENTIKA.

What melanin-rich skin actually needs

What gets described as “black skin” is not one thing. It is countless shades of brown, from the deepest to the lightest, and treating them as a single category is part of why the industry has served them badly for so long.

What they share is higher melanin content — and that has real consequences for formulation. Dryness is more visible, because the dead cells at the surface of the skin scatter light and read as grey against a darker tone. Skin that is not actually drier can still look ashy. Inflammation, whether from a spot, an ingrown hair or a scratch, is more likely to leave a mark behind that lingers for months. These are documented differences, not marketing.

They call for products that restore the skin barrier properly rather than sitting on top of it, and that treat the surface gently enough not to provoke the response that leaves marks. That is the brief my father set himself in 1986, and it is still the band’s brief

Formulated
not licenced

We develop our own formulas rather than buying them in. Every ingredient is chosen for what it does, and when a formula changes, it’s because we changed it.

What do we
Stand for

There are many variations of passages Ipsum available, but the majority suffered alterations in some form injected humour.

Our
Manifesto

What’s called black skin is countless nuances, from the deepest to the lightest. We formulate for what they share — higher melanin, and the specific needs that come with it.

Our Commitment
to Quality

There are many variations of passages Ipsum available, but the majority suffered alterations in some form injected humour.

Commitment
to Quality

It is a long established fact that a reader will distracted by the readable content of a page looking at its layout.

Award-winning
Products

Various versions have evolved over the years sometimes by accidents, sometimes purpose (injected humour and the like).
